Culford School Art Centre

November

BCR Infinity Architects were delighted to accept the RIBA Suffolk Design Award this week as the winner of best Educational Building of 2020.

Situated within the picturesque grounds of Culford Park and sitting between two wings of an existing 19th Century stable block, the alteration and extension to the Culford Art Centre provided much needed rejuvenation both contextually and functionally.

The brief called for a brighter, more spacious and contemporary environment in which students could creatively explore and showcase their work. Our approach sought to provide a gallery-like environment that sympathetically responded to the immediate context of the former stable block and the wider context of Culford Park. Proportioned by the existing buildings height and form and projecting beyond the existing building line only moderately, the new addition, with its muted material palette and minimalist detailing acts as a silhouette of its neighbouring wings.

Delivered on time and budget, through a close collaboration with our client, Culford School, and contractor, Seamans, this project provides a light, spacious and contemporary environment that inspires creativity and it has already attracted new art students.
